Objective 1: Share philosophy, procedures and practices of the financial aid process with faculty and staff

  • EAP #2 & #8
  • Resources: PowerPoint
  • Evidence/Data Points:
    • Agenda/Minutes from Meeting
    • PowerPoint slides and/or handouts
  • Reflections:
This process of sharing philosophy, procedures and practices of financial aid information with faculty and staff is both a necessary 'evil' and a worthwhile endeavor.  Financial Aid is not easily understood nor does it always result in the desired outcomes, but it is one of the most accountable programs on campus and it drives a lot of the existence on campus, as well.  Finally, because of the interrelationships among departments, Financial Aid philosophy, procedures and practices must be understood (to at least some degree) by all faculty and staff.  The informational PowerPoint was meant to dispell misconceptions and lay the foundation for better communication.  With the added Jeopardy PowerPoint, Financial Aid can be shown to have a sense of humor and fun!  Though my responsibilities no longer directly relate to Financial Aid, I continue to assist Judi in her transition.

Evaluator Comments:

Marie, you did well in working with Judi to make the transition smooth and without disruption to financial services.

Objective 2: Develop Media Center cataloging of print and non-print materials

The current development of Media Center print and non-print materials has been very rewarding to date.  Though there is some drudgery in the cataloging of materials, the joy and positive feelings come from: the selection of a wide variety of resources, my own readings (and subsequent book reviews) from the collection, and most importantly, the student checkouts and book discussions upon return.  I have a long way to go in this arena - the collection is quite small and primarily high school-oriented; there was very little assertive marketing done to students or faculty; and there is more to learn about the power of the Destiny software.

The media center planning was apparently good because it has been up and running for students to utilize.

Objective 3: Assess media and instructional technology needs of faculty and students, develop and implement appropriate programs, and communicate, as applicable

This objective has been by far the most time-consuming, rewarding and productive one!  Assessing media and technology needs of faculty and students, developing and implementing programs and communicating, as applicable, will be ongoing especially given the "firehose" of information available and the dramatic rate of change in our world.  I look forward to continuing down this path, but I want to try to reach and energize more faculty and students next year through different tools.  The promise of our online/distance learning endeavors might assist and I plan to schedule individual meetings with teachers to better understand their needs.  The faculty/staff survey of professional development topics was a good start and I'd like to see that repeated next year - in addition, I'd like to survey students in that manner, as well.  I continue to believe in the collaborative power of wikis and I know we have not even begun to tap that tool as a resource - I hope to find other ways of "sneaking it in the back door!"  It was little more than a year ago that I first entered the world of "Media Specialist" by preparing for the certification - I've come a long way, and I have a ways to go (thank goodness - glad the challenge will still be there!)

Evaluator Comments:

Marie has done an excellent job in staff development in the online tools that are available for staff.

Objective 4: Experiment with online learning tools to both enhance classroom learning activities and to develop additional programs using distance learning

  • EAP #8, #10, & #12
  • Resources: Professional Development, Other Faculty & Staff
  • Evidence/Data Points:
  • Reflections:

If Objective 3 was the most time consuming, rewarding, and productive, this objective was not far behind.  I've experimented with so many online learning tools that I cannot even keep track of them all.  There are ones that are beginning to "stick" - for instance, del.icio.us is something I cannot live without!  The whole concept of tagging and sharing will undoubtedly play larger roles in the future, but for now the sheer ability to organize my bookmarks in a multi-dimensional way and to view them from any Internet-access computer is very amazing and worthwhile.  In fact, it appears I have more than 400 websites tagged with web2.0, indicating an online learning tool of some sort.  I hope I can encourage their use in the classrooms more next year - most really do have great instructional and/or learning value!

Delving into Moodle has also been incredible, though I'm a bit disappointed in the lack of "stickiness" from others - I know the timing wasn't great with so many other things going on and with limited bandwidth, but I had hoped for more.  In the meantime, it is probably okay, since the district may well allow us to begin using Angel soon (though there are still many questions about that LMS tool, as well).

Evaluator Comments:

The Moodle training has been excellent as well as time consuming. This area will obviously continue to be one of much interest and value to our staff.
